He arrived in China at just 24 years old, leaving behind a Germany marked by rising anti- Semitism. A classmate’s words changed his path: “If you want to participate in the anti-fascist battle, then you go to China.”
In Yan’an, Muller met top CPC leaders, including Mao Zedong. He worked as a surgeon at the Dr Bethune International Peace Hospital in Yan’an. During this time, he observed how the Eighth Route Army was different from the Kuomintang.
