President Mahama Calls for Stronger Democratic Governance, Self-Reliant Development Model

President John Dramani Mahama has called for the strengthening of democratic governance, increased citizen participation, and the adoption of a development model driven by Ghana’s own capacities and institutions.

Speaking at the 4th Annual Convening of the Ghana Civil Society Forum, President Mahama reflected on Ghana’s democratic journey since the establishment of the Fourth Republic, highlighting key achievements such as peaceful transfers of power, stronger democratic institutions, a vibrant media landscape, and growing citizen engagement.

The President stressed that these democratic gains must be protected and sustained, noting that democracy should be measured not only by the conduct of elections but also by the extent to which citizens feel heard, institutions remain accountable, public policies address the needs of ordinary people, and development reaches communities across the country.

President Mahama further advocated for a renewed approach to Africa’s development agenda, emphasizing the need to prioritize domestic capacity, innovation, enterprise, and national ownership in financing and driving development.

While acknowledging the valuable support of development partners, he underscored the importance of building a resilient and self-sustaining development framework capable of addressing Ghana’s long-term aspirations.

According to the President, this vision continues to shape his administration’s policy direction and reforms, including measures aimed at prudent economic management, enhanced domestic revenue mobilisation, economic diversification, export promotion, and strategic investment attraction.

President Mahama also commended civil society organisations for their significant contributions to Ghana’s democratic development over the years. He described civil society groups as critical advocates for human rights, transparency, accountability, and inclusive development.

He noted that many of Ghana’s democratic successes have been achieved through constructive engagement between government and civic actors, reaffirming his commitment to continued collaboration with civil society in advancing national development and strengthening democratic governance.

The 4th Annual Convening of the Ghana Civil Society Forum brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, and development institutions to discuss strategies for promoting democratic accountability, citizen participation, and sustainable development in Ghana.
