ORAL: 5 to 10 cases at advanced stages of prosecution – Deputy A-G

The Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai has disclosed that between five and ten major cases under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) are at advanced stages of prosecution, with several more expected to be filed in court in the coming months.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, July 26, the Deputy Attorney-General said prosecutors identified about 30 cases considered suitable for prosecution after reviewing ORAL report.

“I think we have between five and ten now at advanced stages. When we analysed the report, I think we had about 30 cases that we thought are prosecutable,” he said.

He added that while some case dockets are already complete, prosecutors may begin filing those cases during the legal vacation.

According to him, the Attorney-General’s Department is proceeding based on the strength of the evidence rather than the profile of the individuals involved.

“As far as ORAL is concerned, we are going to prosecute. When we are working, we don’t focus on which one is big or not. We focus on cases which are prosecutable,” he stated.

The Deputy Attorney-General, however, hinted that the public should expect more significant prosecutions in the near future.

“I can tell you there would be some interesting cases coming soon,” he added.

His comments reaffirm the government’s commitment to pursuing cases arising from the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, which was established to investigate allegations of corruption, financial loss to the state and the misappropriation of public resources.
