HEATED EXCHANGE ERUPTS BETWEEN RENT CONTROL BOSS AND HOSTEL OWNER IN CAPE COAST OVER FEE REGULATION
A tense confrontation unfolded in Cape Coast after the Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department engaged in a heated exchange with the owner of Marplins Hostel during an inspection exercise.
The disagreement reportedly began when the hostel proprietor challenged the Department’s authority to regulate hostel fees, arguing that the government did not finance the construction of private hostels and therefore had no justification for determining the prices they charge students.
According to videos circulating on social media, the two exchanged strong words as the inspection team carried out its enforcement exercise.
The incident comes amid the Rent Control Department’s nationwide campaign to ensure compliance with rent regulations for student hostels, following concerns over rising accommodation costs in tertiary institutions.
The Department has in recent weeks intensified inspections across university communities, warning hostel operators against imposing arbitrary fee increases on students.
