Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 May Remove Foldable Crease but Make Hinge Harder to Use

Samsung is reportedly preparing a major redesign of its foldable phone technology, with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra expected to feature a significantly improved hinge system aimed at reducing the visible crease on the display.

The new foldable devices are expected to be unveiled at a Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22, but details emerging ahead of the launch suggest the company has made a major engineering tradeoff to achieve a smoother display experience.

According to a report by Ice Universe, Samsung has completely redesigned the hinge mechanism for both models compared with last year’s Galaxy Z Fold7.

The redesigned hinge is reportedly capable of producing a crease that is almost invisible, bringing Samsung closer to the foldable display quality seen on competitors such as the Oppo Find N6.

However, the improvement may come with a compromise.

The new hinge design is said to make the opening and closing motion of the phones feel “more decisive”, meaning users may find it more difficult to hold the devices at certain angles compared with previous Galaxy Z Fold models.

This could affect one of the key features of Samsung’s foldable phones, the ability to position the device at various angles for activities such as video calls, viewing content, or using the phone in a laptop-style mode.

While Samsung has not officially confirmed the details, the reports suggest the company prioritised a cleaner, more seamless display experience over maximum hinge flexibility.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are expected to compete in an increasingly crowded foldable smartphone market, where manufacturers are focusing on thinner designs, stronger hinges and displays with less noticeable folding marks.
