Bill Gates Warns Al Could Cause One Billion Deaths
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could become powerful enough to contribute to events causing one billion deaths.
Speaking to NBC’s “Meet the Press; Gates said, “AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths.” He added that there had never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of advanced AI tools and people with harmful intentions.
Gates’ warning comes as AI systems become increasingly capable of writing computer code, conducting research, generating information and operating digital tools. While these abilities could improve healthcare, education and productivity, they could also be misused.
The technology could assist cyberattacks, spread disinformation, target critical infrastructure or help malicious actors develop dangerous biological threats. AI systems connected to external networks could also cause harm if they misunderstand instructions or act without adequate human supervision.
Gates has also warned that AI could cause major economic disruption by replacing workers and widening inequality. He believes the benefits of the technology could become concentrated among a small number of powerful companies unless governments take steps to protect workers and promote fair access.
The Microsoft co-founder argued that self-regulation by technology companies is not enough. He called for governments, lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies to establish mandatory safeguards, monitoring systems and clear accountability rules.
Gates’ warning does not mean that a catastrophe is inevitable. Instead, it is a call for action before AI becomes more powerful and more deeply connected to sensitive systems.
As companies compete to develop increasingly advanced models, governments face growing pressure to balance innovation with public safety. The decisions made now could determine whether AI becomes a tool for widespread progress or a way to magnify humanity’s most destructive intentions.
