I WON’T COOK BANKU OR WASH CLOTHES BECAUSE OF VOTES – A-Plus
Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has stated that he will not engage in household chores such as cooking banku or washing clothes simply to win the support of constituents.
Speaking in an interview with 1957 News on July 1, 2026, the outspoken MP said he is focused on delivering meaningful development to his constituency rather than putting on performances designed to impress voters ahead of future elections.
According to A-Plus, many politicians feel compelled to project a certain public image or even fake accents to appear respectable, but he has chosen to remain authentic.
“Some people think if you’re a politician, you have to keep composure and even fake an accent sometimes. I’m not like that. By 2028, when we go back to account to the people, they will come to Gomoa and judge me based on what I have done,” he said.
He maintained that leadership should be measured by tangible development rather than public perception.
“I know they will say I don’t respect myself; then they will see what I’ve done in Gomoa and compare it with the MP they think respects himself,” he added.
A-Plus also revealed that during a recent trip to Canada, he deliberately skipped attending a Black Stars match because he was pursuing investment opportunities for his constituency.
“When I went to Canada, there was a Black Stars football match, but I didn’t go and watch. I was chasing solar projects for my constituency while your respected MP was watching football,” he stated.
The Gomoa Central legislator further criticised what he described as unrealistic expectations from some constituents, insisting that an MP’s responsibility is to create opportunities and drive development, not carry out domestic chores.
“If you build your house in a waterlogged area and it floods, I won’t pamper you. Some expect us to go around the neighbourhood and help them cook banku. I’m a big man, so I don’t cook banku,” he remarked.
He continued by saying he prefers creating jobs and improving livelihoods instead of doing personal errands for constituents.
“I look for jobs for the youth; I don’t do chores for people. I’m too nice for that. I have a washing machine in my house, and you expect me to wash your clothes because of votes. Have you seen that before? You expect an honourable to do chores for you?” he questioned.
A-Plus also argued that he is not intimidated by voters because, unlike some politicians, he does not misuse public funds.
“Every MP who steals the common fund and spends government money is scared of voters. I don’t spend government money and I don’t steal common fund. We were asked to go and watch football and the government would fund it, but I refused. I’m not scared of you as a voter,” he said.
He concluded by reiterating that he wants to be judged based on his performance and integrity rather than political theatrics.
“You can vote for who will steal your money. You can also choose someone you think doesn’t respect himself. I’m not your regular MP,” A-Plus stated.
