WhatsApp May Block Logins on Phones Running Older iOS and Android Versions
WhatsApp may prevent some users from logging into their accounts if their phones run outdated versions of iOS or Android.
The reported change is part of a wider effort to improve security and protect WhatsApp accounts from attacks that target older operating systems.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is introducing an alert for users whose devices use unsupported or outdated software. The alert may ask affected users to update their phone’s operating system before they can continue using the account.
In some cases, the restriction could affect the login process even when the user has installed the latest version of the WhatsApp application available for that phone.
The move is linked to security concerns. Older operating systems may no longer receive regular security updates from Apple or Google, leaving them more exposed to malware, spyware and other attacks. If WhatsApp detects that a device is running software it considers unsafe, the platform may require an update before allowing access.
WhatsApp’s official Help Centre currently lists Android 6.0 and newer as supported operating systems. The company has also announced that, from November 30, 2026, it will support only iPhones running iOS 15.5 or later.
WhatsApp previously supported some older iPhone software, but the company regularly reviews its operating-system requirements. Devices that cannot receive newer updates may eventually lose access to new versions of the application.
Android users should check their phone’s software version by opening the Settings application and looking for “About phone” or “Software update.” iPhone users can check by opening Settings, selecting General and then Software Update.
If an update is available, users should install it through the official system settings. They should also ensure that the phone has enough storage space, a stable internet connection and sufficient battery power before beginning the installation.
Some older phones may not be able to install the required operating-system update. In that situation, users may have to replace the device if they want to continue accessing WhatsApp through the official application.
Before changing phones, users should back up their WhatsApp chats, photos and videos. They should also make sure they still have access to the telephone number used for WhatsApp verification.
Users should be careful with messages claiming to offer unofficial WhatsApp updates. Downloading modified applications from unknown websites can expose accounts and personal information to fraudsters. WhatsApp should be downloaded only from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or the company’s official channels.
